Report on a European
attitude

#notafraid is a photo report about the similarities and differences of commemoration after Islamist attacks in European cities between 2015 and 2020.

Exhibitions, an illustrated book and workshops will provide insights into European sensitivities in the very different ways in which the consequences of terrorism are dealt with: Between state-bearing and profane, instrumentalizing and appreciative commemoration, between grief and catharsis.

#notafraid wants to support a European position that is neither intimidated by Islamist terror nor populists.

Since the attacks in Paris in November 2015, the report has grown into an extensive documentation with photos of the anniversaries of the attacks. These are supplemented by interviews with people who play a special role in the respective city.

Prospects
The first part of #notafraid deals with the commemoration of the victims of an ISIS offensive in Western Europe, the beginning of which can be dated with the attack against the Jewish Museum in Brussels in 2014.
The next step will be a more global perspective: in October 2019 the first reports on the commemoration after the attacks on the synagogues in Halle and Pittsburgh were produced, in March 2020 on the mosques in Christchurch. Further reports are in preparation, among others, for El Paso (USA), Hanau (Germany), Mogadishu (Somalia) and Colombo (Sri Lanka).

Cooperation partners and supporters are being sought.

Halle (Germany, 2019)
Trash cans cordon of a crime scene, right-wing radicals mingle with the commemoration... the day after the attack motivated by antisemitism.
Pittsburgh (USA, 2019)
Patriotic in interreligious dialogue: one year after the attack of the Tree of Life Synagogue.
Christchurch (New Zealand, 2020)
Commemoration in Corona times, one year after the attacks on two mosques with cancellations, missionary, culinary and Haka dance.
Partners and supporters
The project #notafraid origins in the initiative of the photographer Boris Bocheinski. It is supported by a network of partners, most of whom have worked together for years in various fields. In addition to the financial support, it is their competencies in pedagogical and linguistic matters, as well as organisational structures that bring them into play, without which such a large and complex project cannot be realised.

For the realization of more exhibitions and workshops, in and outside of Europe we are still looking for further support from companies, media, institutions and individuals.
